Curriculum Vision Statement
At St. Peter’s, we offer an ambitious and inclusive curriculum for all our pupils, rooted in our Catholic vision of Live, Love and Learn. This vision is at the heart of everything we do and these three strands serve as our curriculum drivers. It guides our mission to develop the whole child — academically, spiritually, morally, socially, and emotionally — so that every individual is enabled to flourish and fulfil their God-given potential.
We believe that a high-quality education is one that nurtures life in all its fullness, helping children grow in faith, wisdom, and understanding. Our curriculum is carefully designed to reflect our Gospel values and to prepare pupils to be compassionate, respectful, and active citizens of the modern world.
Curriculum Vision
At St. Peter’s Catholic Primary School, our vision is to provide a carefully considered, well designed and sequenced curriculum so that we are able to offer an education which:
• is rooted in our Catholic Faith, and inclusive and loving ethos;
• is ambitious for all of our pupils, including those who are disadvantaged;
• is broad and balanced in its coverage; brings to life the spiritual and moral ethos of our school;
• exposes our children to the very best which has been thought of, said and done;
• exposes our children to the impact of significant events and people - both good and bad;
• prepares our children to contribute positively to the world of tomorrow.
Our vision is to provide a knowledge rich curriculum that identifies the big ideas, key concepts and powerful knowledge and uncovers this in a clear and progressive way. We aim to build knowledge systematically and review and revisit this learning often. Our ambition is that our pupils methodically explore this knowledge so they can recall with fluency, understand more, and reason with knowledge articulately and confidently. Literacy and language is a crucial component of our curriculum offer. It underpins our whole approach to learning. We consider Reading to be one of the primary vehicles for acquiring knowledge. It is central to all of the work we do here at St. Peter’s Catholic Primary School. We are passionate in our belief that great literature exposes children to stories, places, facts and people that each add value to their understanding of the world. Our aspiration is that our curriculum, approach to teaching and learning, and the wider and cultural experiences provided, will ensure that all of our children will be inspired learners, will be well-equipped to add value to society, and to be positive and caring citizens in the modern world.
Fundamentally, our curriculum provokes deep thinking. We aspire for our children to use their spiritual and moral grounding to consider the bigger picture, make sound decisions, and be able to debate, refute, discuss, analyse and articulate this knowledge by word and by pen. We hope they will follow in Jesus’ footsteps by turning concern into action and be courageous in doing so with love, faith and reason. This approach is underpinned by the famous Christian philosopher, Saint Augustine of Hippo, who said:
Understand so that you may believe, believe so that you may understand.
Our curriculum is structured around the core values of Live, Love and Learn, which underpin all areas of school life and help shape the character and future of every child in our care.
Live
To Live is to embrace life with courage, joy and purpose. At St. Peter’s, we want our children to live life to the full—just as Jesus intended. Our curriculum encourages children to develop a strong sense of identity, wellbeing, and resilience. It nurtures an understanding of their place in the local and global community, and the responsibilities they hold as stewards of God’s creation.
Through exploration of our local area, history, and wider world, we help pupils develop an understanding of community and service. We foster the confidence and values that will help them grow into intelligent, principled, kind and engaged citizens—ready to make a positive difference in society.
Love
At the heart of our school is the call to Love: God, one another, and ourselves. This value is woven through every aspect of our curriculum. We model and teach children to show kindness, compassion, forgiveness and respect. These are not just ideas we speak about, but principles we live by each day.
Our curriculum provides rich opportunities for pupils to explore relationships, diversity, equality and justice. Through Religious Education, collective worship, and daily interactions, we promote love as a guiding force that binds us as a community and inspires pupils to act with empathy and integrity.
St. Augustine teaches us that we should make good use of God’s gifts by always seeking to learn. We aspire to promote and develop a life-long love of learning: the beauty of the arts, the awe and wonder of science and the natural world, the power of literature and of spoken word, the complexities of the humanities, the power of movement and sport, and the richness and the world we live in.
Learn
We believe that to Learn is to grow in wisdom and to discover the fullness of the world God has created. At St. Peter’s, learning is a joyful, lifelong journey. Our curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, critical thinking and creativity. We strive to make learning meaningful, engaging and challenging so that all children achieve academic excellence.
Each subject is planned carefully to build knowledge and skills over time. Our teaching is informed by the latest educational research and guided by our commitment to inclusion and high expectations for all. We help children make connections across subjects, revisit and embed knowledge, and reflect deeply on their learning. It is this deep knowledge and capital which will empower our children to flourish in the modern and future world.
Our ultimate goal is for every pupil to become an independent, motivated learner who is equipped to thrive in the next stage of their education—and in life.
Curriculum Implementation
We ensure our curriculum is broad, balanced and coherently sequenced. Each subject is mapped out across year groups with clear progression in knowledge and skills. Statutory national curriculum requirements are fully met, and enhanced by cross-curricular links, local context, Catholic Social Teaching and Gospel values.
Teachers make use of evidence-informed approaches to pedagogy and assessment, including retrieval practice, formative feedback, and metacognitive strategies. Lessons are carefully structured to enable pupils to connect new learning with prior knowledge, while support is in place to ensure all learners, including those with additional needs, can succeed.
Regular opportunities are provided for children to revisit, deepen and apply what they have learned.
Curriculum Impact
We continually monitor and evaluate the impact of our curriculum to ensure it meets the needs of our pupils and reflects our core values of Live, Love and Learn. This includes:
• Tracking of pupil progress across all subjects (including assessment data)
• Book looks and pupil voice activities
• Lesson observations and learning walks
• Feedback from parents and carers
Leaders, at all levels, work systematically and rigorously to monitor, review, adapt and improve our curriculum so that our children continue to benefit from the high standards of teaching and learning.
The impact of our curriculum is seen in the confidence, character and academic success of our children. They are engaged, resilient learners who leave St. Peter’s ready to embrace the next chapter in their education — and life — with faith, purpose and hope.
Ongoing Curriculum Development
We are committed to continuous improvement and review of our curriculum to ensure it remains dynamic, relevant and ambitious. Planning documents and curriculum maps are updated regularly to reflect our evolving practice and the needs of our pupils.
